Acronis
It is the market leader with its Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud platform, a cloud-based backup and security service aimed at the midmarket and offered largely by service providers through 30 data centres located in all key continents. Acronis Cyber Protect is an on-premises software solution that provides a comprehensive backup and protection solution for physical servers, on-premises virtual machines, cloud instances, and endpoints. In 2020, Acronis added a number of security improvements to its on-premises and backup as a service (BaaS) platforms that enhanced malware detection and ensured the safe recovery of backup copies.
Arcserve
The backup portfolio of Arcserve consists of Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP), Arcserve Backup, Arcserve Appliances, Arcserve UDP Cloud Direct, Arcserve UDP Cloud Hybrid Secured by Sophos, and Arcserve Cloud Backup for Office 365. Arcserve's operations are regionally diverse, and the majority of its customers are midmarket businesses. During the trial time, Arcserve launched UDP 8.0, which supports immutable cloud storage backups, Oracle RMAN integration, Nutanix AHV backup support, and Microsoft Teams backup support. In addition, Arcserve X series Appliances, an integrated backup, disaster recovery (DR), and security solution, were introduced. The provider joined with StorageCraft in March 2021, thereby expanding its product portfolio to include scale-out storage and offering new data security options, such as SaaS backup.
Cohesity
The majority of its backup product range comprises of DataProtect, a service that runs on Cohesity Helios, a SaaS data management platform. Cohesity's operations are mostly concentrated in North America and Western Europe, and the majority of its customers fall within the enterprise and upper midmarket segments. In the past 12 months, the vendor has released two major software updates, 6.5.1 and 6.6; new key features include support for instant restore of Oracle Databases; disaster recovery for VMware; Microsoft Office 365 SharePoint Online, Teams and Groups backup; AWS Amazon RDS and Aurora database backup; and multiple enhancements to Azure VM backup and tiering. Cohesity introduced its BaaS solution in October 2020 as part of its Data Management as a Service (DMaaS) portfolio, which uses the Cohesity Helios platform, DataProtect service, and AWS infrastructure to protect and manage hybrid environments.
Commvault
The majority of its backup/recovery offerings include Commvault Complete Data Protection, Commvault HyperScale X, and Commvault Metallic. Commvault's operations are regionally diverse, and the majority of its clientele are large enterprises. Throughout the assessment period, the vendor continued to develop and expand its cloud-native data protection features for Commvault Complete Data Protection, with a particular emphasis on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. In addition, it introduced two HyperScale X appliances, the HS2300 and HS4300, with enhanced capacity and performance. In addition, Commvault released significant capabilities for its Metallic SaaS platform, including backup for SAP HANA, Oracle, Salesforce, files, and Kubernetes. EMEA and Asia-Pacific were also made available for the Commvault Metallic service.
Dell Technologies
The Dell EMC Data Protection Suite, which includes Avamar, NetWorker, and PowerProtect Data Manager, constitutes the majority of its backup and recovery software range. Its array of appliances includes the PowerProtect DP series (integrated appliances) and the PowerProtect DD Series (target-based appliances). Dell Technologies' operations are globally diverse, and its customers span the midmarket and corporate market groups. PowerProtect Data Manager has received four major software updates in the past year. Support for application-consistent backups in Kubernetes, including VMware Tanzu Kubernetes and SAP HANA backup, guest workload support for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, and enhancements to Oracle Database and VMware backup, including protection of VMware Cloud Foundation infrastructure, are included in these updates. In an effort to simplify its appliance range, Dell Technologies will discontinue the Dell EMC PowerProtect X400 in August 2020.
Druva
The Druva Cloud Platform is a BaaS-based solution that stores and manages backup data using AWS infrastructure. Three solutions comprise the platform: Phoenix for server backup, inSync for SaaS apps and endpoint backup, and CloudRanger for cloud-native backup and DR. Druva's activities are geographically diverse, and its clients primarily use the platform to secure remote environments, endpoints, cloud-native services, and SaaS applications. A ransomware recovery service, integrated backup and archiving for network-attached storage (NAS) data, Azure Active Directory integration, and advancements for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server backup were delivered in the past year. In November 2020, Druva bought sfApex to enhance its Salesforce data protection capabilities.
IBM
Spectrum Protect is a suite of products that includes Spectrum Protect Plus, Spectrum Protect Snapshot, and Spectrum Copy Data Management. Together, they fulfil the data protection and reuse needs of a wide variety of applications. IBM's operations are geographically diverse, and the majority of its customers are large enterprises. The manufacturer has published two updates for Spectrum Protect and Spectrum Protect Plus in the past year. Spectrum Protect Plus availability in the AWS marketplace, updates to Kubernetes backup, and support for Google Cloud object storage as a backup target were announced as key features.
Micro Focus
Data Protector, a platform that protects workloads in physical and virtual environments, is its flagship product. Data Protector is available in two editions: the Express edition, which is designed primarily for virtual settings, and the Premium edition, which is designed for virtual and physical environments, as well as cloud integration. The vendor's operations are regionally diverse, and the majority of its customers are in the midmarket. Support for Microsoft 365 Exchange Online, enhanced Hyper-V backup through interaction with change block tracking, and integration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Primera storage array snapshots were highlighted as key capabilities in 2017.
Rubrik
Rubrik Cloud Data Management (RCDM), its core backup software platform; Polaris, a SaaS platform that provides centralised visibility and management and leverages metadata to provide ransomware assessment, recovery, and data classification; and Mosaic, for protection of NoSQL workloads, make up the majority of its product portfolio. Rubrik's operations are regionally broad, and the majority of its customers are large enterprises. RCDM had two major upgrades in the past year that brought backup support for AWS RDS, Microsoft Office 365 OneDrive, SAP HANA on Google Cloud Platform, and VMware Cloud on AWS. These versions also aimed to enhance the backup and recovery capabilities of Oracle, SQL Server, and VMware environments. Rubrik bought Igneous, a provider of scale-out NAS data management for cloud-based archiving and recovery, in December 2020.
Unitrends
Unitrends Backup Software, Recovery Series Backup Appliance, and Spanning Backup for SaaS application backup comprise its backup offering. The vendor's operations are regionally diverse, and the majority of its customers are in the midmarket. Unitrends introduced the Recovery Series Gen 9 appliances with enhanced capacity and performance during the past year. In addition, it has introduced UniView, a platform that enables centralised control of numerous Recovery Series appliances and SaaS apps, and has continued to enhance the security and analytics capabilities of its software platform.
Veeam
It is led by the Veeam Availability Suite (VAS), which consists of Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam ONE for monitoring and analytics of backups. Through add-on solutions, backup for public cloud environments and DR orchestration are enabled. Veeam's activities are globally diverse, and the majority of its customers are enterprise and midmarket businesses. In the past year, new backup tools for Azure and Google Cloud Platform, an immutable backup repository option for Linux-based backup targets, and plug-ins for Oracle RMAN backup in AIX systems and SAP on Oracle have been introduced. Veeam also improved its AWS backup capabilities by adding support for AWS RDS, application-consistent EC2 backup, cross-region DR on AWS, change-block tracking with EBS volumes, and support for AWS Outposts. Veeam bought Kasten in October 2020, increasing its product line to include container backup functionality.
Veritas Technologies
NetBackup, NetBackup Appliances, and Backup Exec constitute the bulk of its backup product offering. Veritas's operations are regionally diverse, and the majority of its clients are large enterprises, with some midmarket clients. Veritas announced two important NetBackup updates: 8.3 and 9.0. These updates include support for Azure Archive tiering, Azure Stack, AWS Outposts, VMware on AWS, VMware on Azure, as well as enhancements to Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and NAS backups. Veritas also introduced NetBackup Flex Scale, an integrated scale-out appliance based on the NetBackup 9.0 standard design. In January 2021, Veritas bought HubStor, a company that specialised in safeguarding SaaS applications.
Zerto
The Zerto platform is a converged backup and DR solution designed to safeguard on-premises and cloud-based applications. Zerto's operations are globally diverse, and the majority of its customers are in the enterprise segment, with a few midmarket clients. During the assessment phase, it issued two major version improvements to the Zerto platform – 8.0 and 8.5. These platform changes include support for Windows VSS-based backup, AWS and Microsoft Azure as long-term retention targets, fast file recovery, and enhancements to backup performance and capacity monitoring.
